Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev focused on social problems at the 15th congress of Nur Otan. He emphasized that people should value the stability and predictability of the Kazakh economy. The president expressed disappointment over the youth policy and spoke for the preservation of the Russian language in the country. Special attention was paid to the tax on luxuries.
Alexey Vlasov, Executive Director of the North-South Center for Political Analysis, Editor-in-Chief of Vestnik Kavkaza, said that Nazarbayev’s point on Russia was the highlight of the speech. The president said that the country will not scrap the trilingual model (English, Russian, Kazakh). Nazarbayev reminded that Singapore, India and Malaysia had decided that they should not neglect the English language. Focusing on the Kazakh language solely is more of a position of nationalists urging to reduce usage of the Russian language, according to the Kazakh leader.
Vlasov noted that a lot of attention was paid to discussions of taxes on luxury, and the Nazarbayev approved anti-corruption policy. No decisive announcements were made, he concluded.
