Alexander Iskandaryan, Director of the Caucasus Institute, expressed doubts that Armenia would join the Customs Union as a full-fledged member. He believes that the decision of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to join the Customs Union announced in Moscow on September 3 was dictated by matters of security.
The expert said that security was the priority of Armenia in the light of the unsettled Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, so it had to choose the CSTO.
Iskandaryan noted that no other CIS member had security problems similar to those of Armenia. Belarus and Azerbaijan have no prospects for EU association. Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia have no security problems. Russia has no instruments to influence Georgia.
