Georgian view of relations with Russia

Geneva will host new talks on Trans-Caucasus security where Russia will insist on the signing of an agreement on non-use of force between Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. On the other hand, the week was highlighted by burning of the Russian flag at a music festival in Poti.

Petre Mamradze, a political analyst and head of the Institute for Strategic Management, emphasized that the Georgian Dream coalition will continue restoring relations with Russia, but at a very slow pace.

The expert sees progress in the fact that some extreme politicians in Tbilisi quit calls for boycotts of the Sochi Olympics. He believes that integration in the EU and NATO would not become an obstacle for the positive process and reminded that Ivanishvili had planned to see whether the Eurasian Union would be good for Georgia or not.

David Berdzenishvili, head of the Republicans at the Georgian parliament, noted that presidential win of Georgy Margvelashvili and Ivanishvili’s choice of Irakly Garibashvili as the successor meant progress. He added that the plebiscite carried out in 2008 had shown that Georgians wanted to be part of the Euro-Atlantic space. The expert said that Georgia was eager to attend the Vilnius summit in late November.
