Experts: Geneva-2 will satisfy no one, but it has to take place
With the approach of the official date of the Geneva-2 international peace conference on a settlement of the Syrian conflict, Russia is actively preparing for the meeting.In particular, the Russian Foreign Ministry has recently made a proposal to hold consultations preceding the conference with UN special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and representatives of the regime of Bashar al-Assad. The Russian expert community is also not avoiding discussion of Geneva-2.Thus, the director of the Center for Public Policy Research, Vladimir Yevseyev, said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza that the conference will become nothing more than an interim step. "...the opposition does not want to negotiate, Bashar al-Assad does not want to negotiate, no one is ready for the actual formation of an interim government," Yevseyev said.The expert suggested that the conference should result in a plan for future actions but will not solve all the problems.Advisor to the Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Deputy Chairman of the Association of Russian Diplomats Andrey Baklanov, proposed turning the Geneva-2 meeting into an event attended by those who are interested in peace. The expert of the Russian Council on Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Petr Stegniy, highlighted the heterogeneous composition of the opposition movement and talked about controversies existing between various groups. In his opinion, this is the greatest challenge of Syria's transition to a consolidated society and peace.
