Experts comment on Geneva nuclear talks

Russian scientists engaged in Iranian studies today discussed the last round of the international talks devoted to the Iranian nuclear crisis recently held in Geneva.

The head of the Modern Iranian Research Centre, Radzhab Safarov, said that many experts had believed that the talks would be really fruitful. The first days of the international conference did in fact confirm such a suggestion, he believes. The propositions made by Iran were very innovative and the fact that the meeting was attended by foreign ministers of the 5+1 group instead of deputy ministers, as had previously been scheduled, was also very promising.

However no agreement has been reached, the expert underlines. The reason is that the Western powers simply aren't ready to compromise. He also notes the constructive position of the United States. The country has understood that it cannot be influential in the region without successful ties with Iran, Safarov says.

According to him, France opposed the deal, because no one was paying attention to it and it was promised nothing on the Iranian market.

The head of the Social and Political Research Centre, Vladimir Yevseyev, underlines that even though the talks with the 5+1 group in Geneva have been fruitless, Iran's talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been very successful.

The parties have managed to approve a road map out of the nuclear crisis and this should be considered a remarkable event, he says. Of course the role of the 5+1 group is more important, no one should underestimate the importance of the IAEA, he stresses.
