Moscow and Tehran have a common approach to Syria

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian had a press conference in Moscow today and discussed key aspects of the situation in the Middle East and Syria. He emphasized that ending violence in Syria was the primary goal.

The deputy minister noted that the Geneva-2 Conference was important to host and added that shipments of weapons to Syria must be stopped. Amir-Abdollahian said that he had met Syrian deputy foreign minister the previous day and discussed humanitarian problems. Iran has granted Syria humanitarian aid worth over 1 billion euro in the last 30 months, according to him.

Amir-Abdollahian stated that Tehran and Moscow had a common approach to settlement of the crisis in Syria. He expressed hope that Syria will hold timely elections and carry out political reforms to decide its fate.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister added that Tehran had never sent weapons or soldiers to Syria. At the same time, terrorists from the West and China were fighting in Syria, he noted. Amir-Abdollahian said that Iran was consulting with Syrian law enforcers to fight terrorism.

He called for a regional dialogue parallel to the Geneva-2 Conference. The role of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran was important and deserved more attention, the deputy minister said.
