Georgia expects no negative reactions from Russia for Vilnius summit

Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Panjikidze said as he was leaving Brussels after the Vilnius summit of the Eastern Partnership to attend the NATO ministers meeting, that she did not believe in Russian aggression against Georgia for signing the association agreement with the EU. She emphasized that Georgia and Russia had civilized and successful talks between envoys.

Zurab Abashidze, Special Envoy of the Georgian Prime Minister for Relations with Russia, told Vestnik Kavkaza that Georgia needed to develop economic ties in all directions and could not choose between Russia or the West. He added that Georgia was discussing formation of a free trade zone with Russia. The official reminded that Georgia had had trade deals with Russia and other CIS members in the 1990s. Georgia wants to trade with Europe, Russia, Turkey, China, Argentina.

Abashidze recalled that Georgia had signed a partnership and cooperation agreement when he had been a representative of Georgia in Brussels in 1996. Vilnius was the second stage in the process. He admitted that Georgia had a long way towards becoming an EU member.
