No progress seen since Iran signed Geneva agreements

A month has passed since the signing of the Geneva agreements between Iran and the West to settle the nuclear problem. Fulfilment of the obligations was postponed from December to January for unknown reasons. The US Congress is preparing a package of economic sanctions, the Iranian parliament presented a bill on enrichment of uranium to 60% yesterday.

Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Center for Socio-Political Studies, said that the document had been signed on November 24. The expert noted that he had had doubts about the agreement from the very start. Iran demands an easing of sanctions, but the first stage of the agreements says nothing about that. It only mentions concessions from the US and hardly any concessions from the EU. The problem is with interpretation of the document. The US administration says that the Geneva agreements do not concern the right of Iran to enrichment of uranium.

Yevseyev added that the Iranian parliament’s announcement to enrich uranium to 60% was a provocation. He noted that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was under great pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards that want control over financial streams.

The expert reminded that US President Barack Obama had the same problems. Israeli and Saudi Arabian lobbyists are doing all they can to ruin the first stage of fulfilment of the obligations. Obama has a serious problem with the state debt and will not go against Congress’ decision to punish Iran.

Concluding comments about the situation, Yevseyev compared it with the events around Iran in 2003.
