Rajab Safarov, Director General of the Center for Studies of Modern Iran, expressed pessimism about the upcoming conference. He called it useless and believes that it discredit future conferences. Safarov reminded that the UN had failed to convince anyone to make peace.
Boris Dolgov, an expert of the Institute for Oriental Studies of the RAS, noted that the conflict could easily be ended if financing of armed groups stopped. The only efforts made so far were aimed at resignation of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, according to the expert. Dolgov sees positive trends in the attitude of the West to the problem.
Stanislav Ivanov, a scientist of the IMEMO Center for International Security of the RAS, agreed that idleness of the UN was a problem. He added that Saudi Arabia and Qatar would not quit their plans to get rid of Assad. Even Russia and the US can do nothing about it. Ivanov warned that the unresolved Syrian crisis may spread throughout the planet, unless solutions are found in 2014.
