Israel became a member of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) yesterday, RIA Novosti reports.
The organization began accepting new members only in 1999. Israel had been an observer at the organization since 1991 and has now become the first non-European member of the organization.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman attended the ceremony of raising the Israeli flag at the CERN headquarters in Geneva.
Israel applied for membership in 2009. The CERN Council accepted the request in December 2013.
