Russia ready for conflict with US for Iran's sake, expert says

Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Center for Socio-Political Studies, has commented on recent rumours around the Russian-Iranian oil deal. He said that exports of 500,000 tons of oil a day to Russia would be too much for Iran and would total about half of all Iran’s oil exports. The expert noted that Iran was exporting only 700,000-1,000,000 barrels of oil a day.

Yevseyev said that the US, Saudi Arabia, Israel and some other countries were opposed to the Russian-Iranian deal. It would mean an evasion of the oil sanctions against Iran. The US did not expect to lift the sanctions when signing the Geneva agreements on November 24.

The political analyst emphasized that the agreement coming into force on January 20 will not soften the basic sanctions against Iran, which target oil, bank accounts and insurance of maritime freighting. Russia operates within the sanctions. This means that it is ready for a conflict with the West, primarily the US, the expert summarizes.

Germany would also want to expand bilateral trade. Many countries would unofficially encourage Russia, Yevseyev believes.
