The head of the Main Department of the Interior Ministry of the North Caucasian Federal District, Sergey Chenchik, said that universal dactylography (fingerprinting) could be carried out in the short term and will help the law-enforcement structures, RIA Novosti reports.
The head of the Investigation Committee of the Russian Prosecution Service, Alexander Bastrykin, spoke about universal dactylography and a genome base for Russia in early March. The idea was widely discussed.
The initiative was criticized by human rights activists, who said that it violates human rights. But the idea of Bastrykin was supported by some functionaries, deputies and scientists, including the vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nikolay Laverov.
A survey in April shows that 51% of people support the initiative, 26% disapprove of the idea and 23% people had no opinion on the issue.
