The US suspects Russia of violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) ratified on June 1, 1988, says Jen Psaki, spokeswoman of the US State Department, ITAR-TASS reports.
The US has warned its NATO allies this month that Russia had been testing a new cruise missile since 2008. The INF treaty signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev forbids such tests.
US experts believe that Russian specialists were developing a medium-range missile under the cover of inter-continental ballistic missiles.
According to the INF, the sides should not deploy ground ballistic and cruise missile with a range of 500-5,500km. US concerns about the Russian missile tests first appeared last year. The Pentagon told the Congress about them.
