Alexey Pushkov, head of the Russian Duma Committee for Foreign Affairs, has clarified the situation around Ukraine, Syria and the resignation of US Ambassador Michael McFaul. Pushkov condemned the PACE resolution on the Euromaidan and denied accusations against Russia of pressure.
He called the bias in the PACE resolution obvious because it had no criticism of the nationalists. The official reminded that about a quarter of PACE members were opposed to the resolution.
Pushkov reminded that Russia was the only state to give Ukraine clear solutions. He said that US and EU diplomats had achieved no success in Ukraine.
Concerning the Syrian crisis, the MP called for patience and said that no quick results should be expected from meetings of the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva. He noted that 75 countries were fighting in Syria and had spent $3 billion. The official emphasized that the opposition will not overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, who had the support of the majority of the population.
Pushkov believes that McFaul’s resignation will not affect Russian-US relations. The MP abstained from commenting on the ambassador’s resignation at this point, although he condemned the concept of linking the government and the opposition.
