Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said his country may consider buying gas from Iraq rather than from Russia as it may be cheaper. Vestnik Kavkaza discussed the issue with Associate Professor of the Ankara University of Economics and Technology, Togrul Ismail.
The expert believes the statement by Yildiz was addressed to Iraq rather than to Russia, Azerbaijan or Iran. Turkey wants Iraq to get interested in the Turkish market because Turkish-Iraqi relations are not in a very good state right now, Yildiz says.
According to the expert, there is no way that Iraqi gas will fully replace Russian gas on the Turkish market. "Iraqi gas can satisfify only 20 percent of Turkey's demand. Currently we are buying gas from 5 countries and oil from 12 countries," he says.
