West condemns violence in Ukraine

European and US politicians have made several visits to Kiev and met opposition figures Arseny Yatsenyuk, Vitaly Klitschko and Oleg Tyagnibok. They have not met Dmitro Yarosh, leader of the Right Sector nationalists. US Secretary of State John Kerry has urged Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych to start talks with opposition, warning that doing otherwise would be punishable with sanctions. He condemned Ukrainian authorities for violence against civilians by the police.

Andreas Umland, a notable German expert for Eastern Europe, said that a civil war and schism of the country were possible, although a peaceful solution was more likely. He believes that the ruling coalition should form a new government together with opposition. The expert blames the government for escalation of violence, as it happened during the early protests caused by failure to sign the EU association agreement.

According to the political analyst, Yatsenyuk, Klitschko and Tyagnibok were in no control of the protesters. “People are raging. They do not want to see Yanukovych as the president or staying on the territory of the country, basically. Only formation of a new government can pacify the population now,” said Umland.

Andrey Petrov, Head of the analytical center for post-Soviet space of the MSU IC, calls declarations for Ukraine identical with the ones made for Syria. The president is depicted as a violator of democratic ideals. Petrov calls the approach of Europe and the West to conflicts a more important problem for the world society than any conflict, even the events in Ukraine. The expert blames the West for destabilizing the situation. He reminded that no strong government had been formed in Iraq, Libya and Egypt.
