Lavrov hopes a security agreement will be signed at the Caspian Summit

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, says that Russia will continue playing an important role in the Caspian Sea region.
Speaking about the position of Moscow, he noted that it was due to Russia that an agreement on the security of the region is now being worked out, under the chairmanship of Azerbaijan.
They plan to finish the work at one of the next meetings, according to the minister.
"The second topical Russian initiative is the establishment of an organization of economic cooperation," said Lavrov.
The first conference dedicated to economic cooperation took place two years ago. Lavrov noted that, in Russia's opinion, such questions as economic cooperation and transport could be discussed within an organization that can allow for five-sided cooperation when needed.
He noted that, until a convention is signed, the agreements of 1920 and 1940 between the USSR and Iran are still in force. Meanwhile, there are three new states in the region.
In his opinion, the main problem of the region is that some states want to declare national zones that practically do not leave any free sea.
According to the words of the minister, the Russian side is ready to make compromises, on condition that freedom of shipping is provided for and that fish remain in the sea.
