Turkish president approves disputed bill increasing government's grip over judiciary

Turkish President Abdullah Gül has approved a controversial bill reshaping the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), acknowledging that he had warned the justice minister that the current text contained many unconstitutional provisions, Hürriyet Daily News reports.

The bill had stirred weeks-long controversy due to a provision tightening government control over the key judicial body. It was first passed by Parliament on February 15 after a marathon session marked by brawls and fisticuffs between ruling party and opposition lawmakers.

The Turkish president has said in a statement that he had warned the government over "unconstitutional" measures in the bill.
