Hizmet leader Gulen asks for political asylum in Canada and New Zealand

Fethullah Gule, leader of the Hizmet religious movement, writer and public figure, has asked Canada and New Zealand to give him political asylum. He currently stays in the US. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted that Turkey may request his extradition, Trend reports.

Both states have refused to grant him asylum.

Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bosdag said that Gulen may be put on the international wanted list.

Erdogan accuses Gulen of recording telephone conversations of about 7,000 members of the ruling and opposition parties within the framework of the a 2011 operation against the Salam organization. Erdogan calls the Hizmet movement politicized and illegal.

Besides being the founder of Hizmet, Gulen founded the Foundation of Writers and Journalists of Turkey.
