Georgian Prime Minister Irakly Garibashvili said that an association agreement with the EU may be signed ahead of schedule. President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy confirmed yesterday that the document will be signed in June. Rompuy noted that he met Garibashvili at the nuclear security summit this year.
Petre Mamradze, Head of the Institute for Strategic Management, emphasized that association would not bring Georgia closer to the European Union and would not enforce national security. It would help young students get grants, find jobs abroad, oblige Georgia to realize democratic reforms. The expert called the situation absurd because the document had no content worth the geopolitical fuss it caused.
According to Mamradze, association was tool to encourage countries to leave Russia’s influence.
Garibashvili said, commenting on his recent visit to Hague and a meeting with Barack Obama at the summit, that the visit was a success.
