PACE concerned about refugee resettlement in Georgia

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is
concerned about the eviction of refugees from Tbilisi, News Georgia
reports, citing a staement by the CE office in Tbilisi.

The chairman of PACE Committee for Migration Affairs and Population,
John Greenway, addressed the Georgian authorities and expressed
concern about the way the evictions were being carried out, saying
that the refugees were not properly informed.

Greenway urged the authorities to halt evictions until proper
conditions are organized and until the resolution of a umber of legal
issues.

In late July, Georgia started evicting refugees from various
administrative buildings, where they had been temporarily living. They
were to be moved to west Georgia.

The refugees demand that the authorities let them live and work in Tbilisi.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) together with the
international community has already expressed regret over the eviction
process.

The Georgian authorities have now halted the process.
