Experts on possibility of foreign interference in Syrian war

The Syrian fighter downed recently by the Turkish Air Forces and rumours about the possible establishment of a southern front against Assad provoked discussion of possible foreign interference in the ongoing civil war in Syria.

The deputy head of the Prognosis and Political Resolution Institute, Alexander Kuznetsov, believes the Syrian conflict has reached deadlock. The Syrian rebels thought that the Western powers would interfere, as happened in Libya, but when these hopes did not come true it turned out that the opposition had no other options, the expert says.

According to him, the United States is reluctant to interfere in the Syrian crisis, but since President Obama's approval rating is lower than ever now, he may be forced to change his approach to the matter.

The deputy chairman of the Russian Diplomats Association, Oleg Peresypkin, said the Russian policy towards Ukraine was a major surprise for Western countries and the US and Nato may react in an emotional way and take action against Assad, even though it seems improbable.

However, such countries as Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia may indeed start a military operation against the Syrian government, he stresses.
