For the first time in Turkey, the positions of mayors of three cities - Diyarbakir, Gaziantep and Aydin - are occupied by women. Two more women became heads of district administrations in the provinces of Hakkari and Konya.
Diyarbakir, the most important city for Turkish Kurds, which they regard as their unofficial capital, for next five years will be administered by a representative of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (PMD), 53 -year-old Gyultan Kyshanak. She won 55 % of the vote, according to RIA Novosti.
Former Minister for Family and Social Policy, member of the ruling Justice and Development Party 48-year-old Fatma Şahin, became the Mayor of Gaziantep. She won 54.7 % of the vote.
A representative of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP ), Ozlem Cherchioglu, became the Mayor of Aydin. She was supported by 43.8 % of the voters.
