Knesset to elect new president on June 10

Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein said that the parliament will elect the president on June 10. Candidates for president need to present bids with signatures of 10 MPs by May 27, ITAR-TASS reports.The candidates for president are Reuven Rivlin, an MP of the Likud Party, Silvan Shalom, a minister of Likud, Meir Shitrit, ex-minister for finances, Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, ex-defense minister, Dalia Itzik, ex-speaker of the Knesset, Dalia Dorner, ex-judge of the Supreme Court, Dan Shechtman, a professor of the Technion University, winner of the Nobel Prize.A candidate for president needs promotion by at least 10 members of the parliament. The elections are secret. A candidate needs a majority of the votes and will be elected to serve for 7 years. A candidate can be elected only once. Three-quarters of the votes are needed to impeach the president.Israeli President Shimon Peres, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, will resign in mid-June 2014. He replaced Moshe Katsav in June 2007. The latter is serving a 7-year jail sentence for raping employees.90-year-old Peres advocates peace talks with the Palestinians and the formation of two states.
