Georgy Kalatozishvili, Tbilisi. Exclusively for Vestnik Kavkaza
The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili has thanked Russia for dealing with the emergency situation in the Dariali gorge caused by the mudflow and landslide. "We are grateful to the Russian side for the offer to help us with technology and other equipment," the head of the Georgian Cabinet said.
Interior Minister Alexander Chikaidze told reporters that the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry has provided their Georgian colleagues with 18 tons of diesel fuel. Given the situation in the Darial Gorge this aid was not only important but also critical because there was no other way to deliver the diesel fuel to the gorge.
The offer of help came from official diplomatic channels.
Georgia and Russian broke off their diplomatic relations in 2008. The disaster on the Russian-Georgian border has given both Moscow and Tbilisi an opportunity to demonstrate their good will in dealing with each other. Apparently, the parties are unwilling to burn all the bridges.
