Poroshenko declared winner of Ukrainian presidential polls

Oleksandr Turchynov, the speaker of parliament of Ukraine and the acting president, said that Petro Poroshenko had won the presidential polls of May 25 with 54.7% of the votes, according to 100% of the protocols processed by the Ukrainian Central Electoral Commission. Turchynov added that Vitaly Klitschko was the new mayor of Kiev, according to preliminary counts.

Vladimir Fesenko, the head of the Penta Center for Applied Political Research, said that the most important thing was that the elections had succeeded and had been organized in one round.

Igor Morozov, a member of the Federation Council Committee for International Affairs, said that Poroshenko was a new politician who had gone through a long path in business and had become a billionaire. The expert noted that the new president will have to develop relations with Russia, members of the Customs Union, CIS free trade zone, the EU and the U.S. Morozov predicts that Poroshenko will make constitutional adjustments, start gas negotiations, develop economic ties and follow the recommendations of the Venice Commission. The expert added that the president had no support in the parliament.

Morozov believes that military activities may end today, should the president order so. He considers negotiations with the east and the south of Ukraine the best idea. The expert predicts that the situation in the conflict regions will aggravate in autumn.

Ukrainian political analyst Alexey Poltorakov said that Poroshenko’s actions will only be evident after the inauguration.

Veronica Krasheninnikova, the director of the Institute for Foreign Political Studies and Initiatives, said that the Euromaidan process in Kiev had started to drive off oligarchs and the only oligarch standing for president was the one to be elected. The analyst predicts that Poroshenko will try to regain the money he had spent on the Maidan protests previously. According to Krasheninnikova, Poroshenko understands that he will have no chances of re-election, so he will most likely try to compensate for as many losses as possible and increase his assets.
