Presidents Vladimir Putin (Russia), Nursultan Nazarbayev (Kazakhstan) and Alexander Lukashenko (Belarus) signed the Treaty of the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU) yesterday. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan wants to join the organization.
Fikret Sadykhov, a professor of the Western University, reminded that Baku had said before that it was not interested in joining the union. However, according to the professor, Azerbaijan is worried about Armenia joining it in the light of the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Armenia, Sadykhov reminded, wanted to join the organization together with Nagorno-Karabakh, a region that does not belong to it. The expert added that President Ilham Aliyev had written a letter to the founders of the union and highlighted that Armenia could not become a member.
Levan Kalandadze, the head of the New Rights, emphasized that Georgia had already made its choice and was not planning to join the EaEU project. He noted that formation of the EaEU could become a problem because its principles differed from those of the EU. The analyst said that it was too early to tell what impact the organization could have on Georgia.
