The 4th summit of the Turkic Council has concluded in Bodrum. Turkmenistan plans to join Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Kyrgyzstan as a new member of the organization. Turkish President Abdullah Gul emphasized at the summit that multilateral relations were a lot more efficient than bilateral contacts. He reminded that the Nakhchivan Declaration had been passed at a summit in 2009, reflecting plans to develop and expand trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian ties.
Aydyn Mirzazadeh, a member of the Azerbaijani parliament, a political analyst, emphasized the importance of the openness of the Council, allowing all countries to cooperate. He said that countries had consolidated and transformed the Council. The analyst pointed out that Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov took part in the summit for the first time, proving progress of the format. Mirzazadeh concluded that the cooperation format was satisfying for everyone.
Political analyst Eduard Poletayev noted that the Turkic Council gathered countries of Central Asia, although without Uzbekistan, for constructive talks, it focused on supporting diasporas, culture and tourism. Turkey and Kazakhstan, in his words, were the main players at the summit.
Hasan Selim Ozertem of the USAK International Research Center believes that Turkey and Azerbaijan played the leading roles in the organization. He said that the Council had good economic prospects. The expert highlighted that Turkey had started paying special attention to tourism development after Turgut Ozal’s presidency. Bodrum is one of the key tourism places of Turkey. Azerbaijan, as he said, was investing big funds in tourism. Ozertem emphasized that Turkic countries could adopt a tourism program similar to that of European countries, where, for example, tourists visiting the Czech Republic are also allowed to visit Austria.
