West shakes Russia's hand in Normandy
Constructive thinking has become a leading feature of negotiations between President Vladimir Putin and such leaders of Western powers as British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. For the first time since the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, the Russian President met with Western colleagues face to face. The meeting has demonstrated that, despite harsh statements by European politicians, they are not ready for an open confrontation with Putin.Information about the talks has been made available only through the press secretaries of the world leaders. The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, said that Putin had talked with Cameron, Merkel and Hollande almost exclusively about ways to resolve the crisis in Ukraine. Peskov also said that an informal conversation took place between Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama. Russian political analysts talked to Vestnik Kavkaza about the importance of these meetings in Normandy in overcoming the division that arose between Russia and the West with the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis. The director of the Center for Political Information, Aleksei Mukhin, said that the negotiations in Paris and Deauville will contribute towards making rhetoric towards Russia from Western politicians less aggressive. The expert also noted that no serious changes in relations between Russia and the U.S. should be expected after the talks. The head of the military and political analysis department of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations at the Moscow State University of International Affairs, Professor Sergei Oznobischev, said that he hopes that today's talks will initiate the process of overcoming a deep value crisis in relations between Russia and the West. Oznobischev drew attention to the fact that Europe today has an urgent need for a dialogue with Russia, defined by "a vital demand for energy resources."
