Azerbaijani press review, June 2-9

The meeting of heads of Turkic-speaking countries in Bodrum, as well as a noticeable warming in Russian-Azerbaijani relations in the light of bilateral visits by senior officials of both countries were the main topics of the outgoing week in the Azerbaijani media. Much attention is paid to the upcoming visits to Azerbaijan by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Commission Russia - Azerbaijan, Dmitry Rogozin, which will be held this month.

"The upcoming visit to Baku of the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, immediately followed by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and then Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, suggests that Azerbaijan is in the midst of geopolitical processes that are rapidly changing the modern global map," writes haqqin.az.
According to the author, it is already clear that Barroso will leave Baku with nothing. The Azerbaijani leadership made its choice from the very beginning, calculating the political and economic risks of signing the association agreement with the EU, and refused to sign it. From this perspective, Barroso can only seek ways of developing bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the EU.
"Perhaps the main event of the month may be marked by an Azerbaijani-Russian rapprochement," says the website minval.az.
"Thus, a couple of days ago, Minister of Economic Development of Russia Alexei Ulyukayev said while in Baku that Azerbaijan's participation in the Eurasian Economic Union, or in the Customs Union, would be logical. The Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Novruz Mammadov said that Azerbaijan does not intend to join the Eurasian Economic Union. A similar idea was voiced by the Minister of Economy and Industry of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev, who noted that the country has no plans to enter into any alliances, including the Eurasian Union and the European Union. However, the day before yesterday information flashed in the media that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Commission Russia - Azerbaijan, Dmitry Rogozin, will visit Azerbaijan in June. What is the goal of the visits of these senior Russian officials? Will they try to involve Azerbaijan in the Eurasian Economic Union? " asks the author.
One of the highlights of last week was the 4th Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States (CCTS) in Bodrum, which was attended by the head of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Kazakhstan - Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyzstan - Almazbek Atambayev and Turkey - Abdullah Gul, and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
According to the newspaper "Kaspiy", in the integration of the Turkic states is a clear tendency for further development. With each new Summit the member countries sign new contracts and agreements, create structures that promote inter-state relations.
Turkmenistan's participation in the summit of Turkic states lets you know that the accession of Turkmenistan to the "Southern Gas Corridor" will be discussed, said the analyst Ilgar Velizade, "Novosti-Azerbaijan" reports.
"A distinctive feature of this summit is that for the first time it was attended by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, who is in Turkey on an official visit. The presence of the President of Turkmenistan at the summit indicates that projects to transport Caspian energy to Europe by the TANAP pipeline will be discussed," said the expert.
