Most Turkish citizens are forecast to support the constitutional
reforms suggested by the government and the Prime Minister Tayyip
Erdogan in the referendum today, reports Reuters. About 56.8% are to
vote for constitutional changes, according to the Konda institute of
public opinion. Erdogan believes that the amendments will help the
process of democratization and Turkish integration into the European
Union. Jury system reforms provide the possibility of initiating cases
against military personnel by non-military institutions. An ombudsman
institution will be initiated by these reforms. A package of
amendments of 26 points is to change the actual constitution, which
came into force in 1980 after the military take-over.
