Putin suggests cancelling approval for launching troops into Ukraine

President of Russia Vladimir Putin has sent a letter to the Federation Council, in which he presented a suggestion on cancellation of the Federation Council's act on using the Armed Forces of Russia on the territory of Ukraine.

The press secretary of the President, Dmitry Peskov, stated that the step was made “to normalize the situation in the eastern regions of Ukraine, and due to the start of trilateral talks on the matter.”

The deputy head of the committee on international affairs of the Federation Council, Andrei Klimov, stated that the Federation Council would support Putin’s suggestion on June 25th.

Alexei Mukhin, Director General of the Center of Political Information, is sure that by such a step the Russian leadership “demonstrates peacefulness and cuts the ground from under the critics who accuse Russia of aggression against Ukraine.” “There will not even be a formal reason for accusing Russia of aggression if the Federation Council cancels its decision, and I think it will do so as soon as possible, just like it made the decision,” Mukhin said.Igor Yuryevich, the editor-in-chief of National Defense Magazine, noted that the point is to encourage a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. “I think it is a foreign political step which is aimed as a contribution to peace talks between Kiev and the Donetsk and Lugansk republics to stimulate a dialogue and making certain decisions which are aimed at a peaceful settlement of the conflict situation.”
