Georgian Prime Minister Irakly Garibashvili, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso have signed EU Association Agreements. Georgy Khukhashvili, ex-advisor to the Georgian prime minister, said that integration into European markets was only an opportunity, not a matter of course.
He believes that dynamic development and good competitive potential would benefit Georgia, failure to comply with European standards would only turn the country into a consumer. Khukhashvili noted that Georgia was given an invitation and further progress was at its own discretion. Overall, the expert emphasized that the integration process of Georgia into the EU had finally started and will depend on the Georgian authorities and business.
Political analyst Alexey Poltorakov reminded that Ukraine had signed the economic part of the Agreement. In his opinion, it is a big step forward, though not a breakthrough. The expert predicts that Ukraine would gain full benefit from the Agreement in 3-5 years, maybe more. The main flaws of the Agreement, the expert explained, will be experienced by small and medium-sized businesses, in terms of quotas and customs. Poltorakov is optimistic about the process and believes that the EU Association Agreement will help Georgia enter the global world through Europe.
