The Russian Education and Science Ministry is considering publishing common literature and Russian language books for pupils. The average entrance score needed to pass in the Russian language dropped by 1.5% in 2014, compared with 2013. The minimum score to pass the Unified State Exam was lowered from 36 points in 2013 to 24 points in 2014, ITAR-TASS reports.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the Council for Interethnic Relations on July 3 that grades of students taking the Unified State Exam in the Russian language was a reason for reframing the education program. One of the main goals is to improve teaching skills and books.
The ministry said that literature should be synchronized with history. As an example, it pointed out that Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” was studied before lessons in the Patriotic War of 1812.
Gajimet Safaraliyev, head of the Russian parliamentary committee for nationalities, considers the initiative to compose unified language and literature books good. He noted that pupils were demonstrating poor knowledge and grammar skills as a result of getting used to evading punctuation on the internet.
The expert added that poor knowledge was also the result of the absence of a common standard. He reminded that there were over 100 Russian language textbooks, as though all education centers had their own version of the language. Neglecting the problem will weaken the country and cause serious repercussions, Safaraliyev believes.
