USA to provide $73.9 million to Georgia for refugee problems

Georgia will receive a grant of $73.9 million from the US government
to improve the conditions of refugees. Deputies in the Georgian
parliament have approved a plan to improve infrastructure and economic
opportunities for refugees, Trend reports.

Since the war with Russia in August 2008, the Georgian authorities
have built 5,000 houses for South Ossetian refugees.

The US funds will be used for Abkhaz refugees. 300,000 people were
forced to leave Abkhazia after the conflict in 1992-1993. Georgia
plans to have solved the housing problem by 2012.

On the night of August 7-8, 2008 Georgian military operations started
in South Ossetia. Georgian forces entered Tskhinvali. Later Russian
forces entered the city, forcing the Georgians out. In late August,
Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Tbilisi broke all diplomatic relations with Moscow and declared the
two break-away republics occupied territories.
