Russia and Azerbaijan hold joint maritime drills in Caspian Sea

The Russian FSB Border Directorate in Dagestan and the State Border Service of Azerbaijan are starting joint maritime drills in the Caspian Sea today. An S001 patrol ship of the Azerbaijani coastal guards arrived at Makhachkala Port on Monday. The Azerbaijani delegation is headed by Deputy Commander of Costal Guards Gajiali Gajiyev. Two Brilliant-project ships and two military motorboats will escort the S001 to sea.

FSB Lieutenant-Colonel Mikhail Naugolnov said that Russia and Azerbaijan will exchange experience in protecting bioresources. He added that the drills had been planned at a meeting of border security chiefs in Yarag-Kazmalyar in May 2013.

Azerbaijani and Russian border guards will exercise in preventing illegal fishing, illegal migration, smuggling of weapons, explosives and other goods, said Igor Shmotkin, the head of the Russian FSB Border Directorate in Dagestan. In his words, the sides will take part in cultural and sporting events, such as visits to Dagestani museums, a volleyball match between crews of Azerbaijani and Dagestani ships.

Military expert Uzeir Jafarov emphasized that the drills were a result of meetings of top-level talks of Russia and Azerbaijan. He noted that they had been planned in 2013, discussed during the visit of President Vladimir Putin to Azerbaijan, and during the meeting of Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu with his Azerbaijani counterpart Zakir Gasanov.

Jafarov pointed out that the drills were to coordinate the efforts of the two states in preventing drug trafficking, poaching and illegal freighting. The expert said that similar drills will be held in the second half of 2013. Russian sailors will visit Azerbaijan at the end of this year or the beginning of the next one.

The military analyst clarified that joint drills would allow Russia and Azerbaijan to modernize their law-enforcement structures to secure maritime borders. Jafarov expressed confidence that there would be forces trying to ruin relations between Azerbaijan and Russia.
