Half of population of leading European states reluctant to grant EU membership to Georgia

ICM Research (UK) questioned people about Georgia joining the European Union. Most Germans, about half of people in the UK and France did not want to see Georgia as a member of the EU. Levan Kalandadze, the head of the economic section of New Rights, said that Europe was doing pretty well at the moment and any new members would be a burden on its development.

He reminded that economic recessions in Greece, Spain and Portugal were very costly for European taxpayers. Kalandadze noted that the European public needed to see progress of Georgian reforms. The next 3-5 years, he believes, will be a test for Georgia to prove its worth and commitment to European integration.

Georgian political analyst Iosif Tsiskarishvili stated that the populations of all EU countries had plenty of problems of their own. Georgia, in this case, is a problematic country. The expert reckons that about 100% of people would have given a negative response if asked about progress achieved in 10 years after granting membership to 10 new countries.

Tsiskarishvili associates the attitude of Europeans towards association with Georgia with growing European skepticism. In his words, the latest elections show that all Europeans want changes. He said that almost all people were unsatisfied with the authorities, while the majority of them wanted to be in power in the country.
