Secret information about money of the Special State Security Service Fund spent by Georgian ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili was published last weekend. Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili emphasized that publishing classified information was against the law, regardless of the prosecution of Saakashvili.
The Prosecutor General’s Office asked the president to declassify the documents several times in order to initiate a criminal case against Saakashvili. The president was forced to declassify it when the public learned about the prosecutors’ request, although he admitted that it was against the law. The Presidential Administration warned that the person responsible for publishing the information would be punished.
Political analyst Georgy Nodia said that what mattered were the differences between the president and the executive. This has been the first public confrontation between Margvelashvili and Ivanishvili’s Georgian Dream coalition. Declassification of the information was only a reason for that. Nodia believes that Maargvelashvili lacks the necessary ambition, determination, courage, will and other qualities to become an independent political center.
Political analyst Alexander Rondeli considers the problem has been exaggerated by the mass media. He agrees that the real problem is in the conflict between the president and the prime minister. The expert noted that the whole story had been ballyhooed by the mass media.
