Defense ministers of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey meet in Nakhchivan

Defense Ministers Irakly Alasania (Georgia), Ismet Yilmaz (Turkey) and Zakir Gasanov (Azerbaijan) are meeting in Nakhchivan today. They will discuss protection of infrastructure communications, railways, strategic pipelines. Military expert Uzeir Jafarov told Vestnik Kavkaza said that the trilateral format was formed to protect energy resources, strategic, economic, political and military interests. The expert believes that the three states may form a military structure and invite other countries to join it.

He doubts that Georgian and Turkish soldiers would take part in resolving the Karabakh problem or that Azerbaijani and Turkish forces would be involved in Georgian territorial disputes.

Irakly Aladashvili, the editor-in-chief of the Arsenali magazine, said that security of oil and gas pipelines connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey will be the main topic. He reminded that, according to Alasania, deals reached in Nakhchivan would not target any other party and would enforce security in the South Caucasus.

Togrul Ismail, a docent of the Faculty for International Relations at the TOBB University of Economics and Technology, noted that the countries had common energy and transportation projects connected to Europe. He pointed out that the meeting was organized when the situation was changing. The expert supposes that discussions of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the light of new tensions on the Azerbaijani-Armenian contact line would be very important. Ismail emphasized that the meeting was organized to enforce security and stability in the region.
