Ankara offers to assist Baku in solving regional problems

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev in Baku today that development of Turkish-Azerbaijani relations will continue with the same decisiveness, confirming Turkey's readiness to help Baku in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute. Erdogan and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said yesterday that the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process was a priority of Turkish foreign policy, while Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu emphasized that he will coordinate efforts with his Azerbaijani counterpart.

Stanislav Ivanov, a 2nd-tier state advisor, an expert of the Science Council of the Russian Security Council, said that Erdogan was demonstrating his intention to distance Turkey from Western attempts to put pressure on Russia. He pointed out that one of Turkey’s security issues was the civil war in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad remained in power. Confrontation with Israel continues. Turkey is actively developing relations with Iraqi Kurdistan, improving relations with Iran. The expert noted that supporting Azerbaijan with military equipment had become an obstacle for Turkey’s role in the Azerbaijani-Armenian dialogue.

Andrey Petrov, the head of the analytical section for post-Soviet space of the IAC of Lomonosov MSU, reminded that the Turkish president, prime minister and foreign minister were talking about coordinating policy with Azerbaijan on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and non-recognition of the Armenian genocide. The expert supposes that the new progress in bilateral relations was associated with Erdogan becoming president. He noted that relations between Turkey and Europe were going downhill and mentioned that Minister for EU Affairs Volkan Bozkir had outlined the reluctance of Turks to find jobs in the EU.
