Georgian Defense Minister Irakly Alasania said that the new format of relations given at the NATO summit in Wales expanded shipments of defense equipment, opened Georgian territory for a NATO training center and allowed Georgian soldiers to take part in drills of Western countries. A group of special NATO experts will operate at the Georgian Defense Ministry and the Armed Forces Command.
Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Panjikidze, attending the NATO summit, said that cooperation with the Alliance has reached an unprecedented level. In her words, quoting NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Alliance had no such format with any other country.
Integration Minister Aleksi Petriashvili said that Georgia, Jordan, Sweden, Finland and Australia will gain the so-called “gold card” status of top NATO partners and the highest position any non-member of the Alliance can get.
Political analyst Alexander Rondeli reminded that Rasmussen had warned about the inability to grant Georgia a road map (MAP) at the Wales summit. He doubts that the population would be disappointed with that, especially in the light of the Ukrainian events. The expert clarified that Georgia will not become a NATO member as long as Russia recognizes the sovereignty of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. NATO, in his words, wants to remains friends with Georgia.
