Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan joins ISIS

Usman Ghazi, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), has announced that it has joined the group Islamic State (ISIS). Islamic State has been reported actively recruiting and training militants on the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, RIA Novosti reports.

17 Uzbek citizens in the ranks of ISIS were killed in an air raid by the international coalition in Syria in late September.

Andrey Kazantsev, the director of the analytical center of the MGIMO Institute for International Studies, said that ISIS had declared activation of its forces in the post-Soviet space, in Russia and Central Asia. The expert believes that the threat should not be exaggerated. He reminded that threats from Afghanistan were a lot more serious than from ISIS, which operates in the Middle East.

Andrey Chevotarev, the director of the Alternativa Center for Actual Studies, said that experts had seen no threat in extremist formations of the Middle East to Central Asia. However, he added, the fact that the terrorist groups were attracting citizens of other Central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan, was a serious threat and a potential base for a future Islamic underground.
