Japan changes the way it calls Georgia

Japan has renamed Georgia from the native Japanese name “Gurujiya” to English “Georgia.” It will be a response to Georgian Prime Minister Grigol Vashadze’s request made in March 2009 to name the country “Georgia” or “Sakartvelo,” TASS reports.

Back then, Japan refused to rename the country so as not to confuse it with the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2014, the name “Georgia” for the country is used by 173 out of 193 UN members.

Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Panjikidze raised the topic a few days ago in the light of TV-Asahi’s (Japan) decision to use the name “Georgia" for the country.
