Post-Soviet space is on the edge of major changes

Fyodor Lukyanov, the editor-in-chief of the journal Russia in Global Affairs, said at a round-table conference entitled “Post-Soviet space: civilization aspects of modern crises and conflicts” that the past year had changed everyone’s priorities. The conference was organized by the North-South Politological Center in Baku, Vestnik Kavkaza and Trend.

Lukyanov explained that priorities had been altered over the crisis in Ukraine and other aspects. In his words, the situation arising after 25 years of changes was an unprecedentedly stable system where a balance was maintaining a high level of stability of processes. The balance during the Cold War was unique. The fall of the USSR became a start for domination of one power, but the power never gained stability and the developments today are a transition of the current world order from latent crisis to dismantling, according to the expert.

The editor-in-chief predicts fragmentation. He noted that the fall of the USSR had structured the post-Soviet space and given way to poorly-managed processes, because the borders formed after 1991 had not been finalized.

The politologist called the collapse of the political model of Ukraine and the start of the fight for its population a manifestation of the shattering world system. In his words, Russia cannot say where everyone is moving, because the world crisis is part of Russia’s development problems.

Lukyanov summarized that the world was on the edge of big changes. He noted that the sanctions were undermining the goals of the countries imposing them, because the market was making decisions before any government was starting to take other actions.
