NATO shows interest in Nagorno-Karabakh

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at a session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in The Hague that the Alliance was worried about the rising tensions in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He emphasized that the conflict had no military solution. The NATO was supporting the OSCE Minsk Group and encouraging peace talks, the secretary general added.

Vladimir Yevseyev, the head of the Caucasus section of the Institute of CIS Countries, said that the Alliance was trying to show its presence in every part of the world, even the Antarctic if it could. Yevseyev believes that NATO is trying to show how much the world needs it. The organization cannot take part in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, it can only express support for the OSCE Minsk Group.

The expert said that NATO’s support for the altered Madrid Principles made no contribution to a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. He recommended the Alliance to focus on ISIS.

Andrey Petrov, deputy director general of the Lomonosov MSU Center for Information and Analysis, noted that NATO wanted to expand in the eastern direction towards the Russian border. So far, it has granted membership to the Baltic states and closely cooperates with Georgia and Ukraine, he reminds. A country with territorial disputes cannot join the Alliance. Petrov opined that vengeance for failure in Syria and strategic military and political goals were some of the reasons for NATO's activeness in Nagorno-Karabakh. He doubts that Baku, with its balanced foreign policy and preference for bilateral economic contacts, and Armenia, which is a member of the CSTO and will become a member of the Eurasian Economic Union on January 1, 2015, would suddenly decide to make a turn towards NATO.
