Commenting on the Cairo court’s rejection of the prosecution of ex-President Hosni Mubarak over the mass deaths of protesters in 2011, the president of the Middle East Institute, Yevgeny Satanovsky, said that the U.S. democratic model was only successful in the U.S. itself and attempts to build it elsewhere were naïve.

He reminded that Israel had an Eastern European political model influenced by Poltava, Kiev, Warsaw, Vilnius. Satanovsky added that Iran had a theocracy, Turks were influenced by the Ottoman Empire and had a president and prime minister.

Andrey Baklanov, deputy head of the Association of Russian Diplomats, reminded that Russia had been opposed to the U.S. model of democracy in the Middle East for 10 years. He reminded that all countries had different traditions that needed consideration. Attempts to bring democracy to them resulted in infighting, Baklanov stated. The diplomat summarized that the developments were proving the indisputable rectitude of the Russian line and said that it was gaining support in Arab states. Baklanov noted that Saudi Arabia was a monarchy with a legislative branch lacking serious power, the Shura Council consisting of many professionals.
