Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on September 27
establishing an independent Investigation Committee, ‘Russkaya Gazeta’
reports.
The Investigation Committee will take control of all buildings,
structures and property of the Investigation Committee of the
Prosecution Service. While the decree comes into force the
Investigation Committee of the Prosecution is continuing work.
The Investigation Committee will be headed by a Chairman, with a
maximum of 13 deputies, including a first deputy chairman, one deputy
official secretary and one deputy head of the main military
investigation department.
The ranking system of the committee will be worked out. Staff numbers
in its territorial branches is 21,156, with the staff numbers of the
military investigation department amounting to 2,034.
The Chairman of the Investigation Committee of the Prosecution
Service, Vladimir Markin, said that further procedures will be
possible only after the Federal Law on the Investigation Committee
comes into force.
The deputy head of the Security Committee of the State Duma, Vladimir
Kolesnikov, said that the State Duma will consider the project at the
end of this year.
The Investigation Committee will work on serious crimes. Its structure
will incorporate other investigation units of the police, FSB and Drug
Police. The police, FSB and Drug Police will investigate crimes of
average seriousness.
