Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said at a meeting with his counterparts Elmar Mammadyarov (Azerbaijan) and Tamar Beruchashvili (Georgia) in Kars that Armenia could take part in interstate economic projects by settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with Azerbaijan. The Turkish minister added that Armenia should withdraw from the 20% of Azerbaijani territories it has occupied and follow the resolutions of the UN and the Council of Europe.
Andrey Petrov, deputy head of the M.V. Lomonosov MSU Information and Analysis Center, reminded that Turkey had never given up normalization of relations with Armenia on condition of de-occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh. In his words, settlement of the conflict would allow Armenia to interact in the economy more actively, gain investments and take part in regional projects.
Petrov noted that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline had been completed and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars transportation line will open in 2015, the Southern Gas Corridor was being realized. Armenia could have taken part in the projects and may miss opportunities in development of economic infrastructure in the future.
Connection of Baku with Nakhchivan and Azerbaijan with Turkey can simplify travelling for people and freighting. Turkey would get better connection with Russia, an alternative to the Georgian Military Road. The bypasses through Georgia and Iran are a forced measure, less lucrative than a direct path through Armenia could be.
