The head of the Department for Arab and African countries of Iran's Foreign Ministry, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, claimed today that Iran supported the initiative of Russia to hold negotiations in Moscow between the leaders of the opposition and the Syrian government as a political dialogue in the country.
"In the context of national dialogue we support Moscow's idea to conduct negotiations between representatives of the government and the moderate opposition," Abdollahian is quoted by RIA News.
Amir Abdollahian noted that Iran will also closely monitor the implementation of its plan to resolve the Syrian problem, which consists of four points. "One of the fundamental points of this plan, in fact, is the holding of a national dialogue itself," the deputy minister said.
Earlier, the Russian Federation proposed providing "a Moscow space" to negotiate a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Syria, which may take place before the end of January 2015. Negotiations are aimed at bringing the Syrian opposition groups to develop a common approach to negotiations with the government of the SAR, and at further approval of the agenda and format of the "Geneva-3" conference.
