British authorities refuse to cooperate with Russian public justice

Britain has decided not to return stolen Russian capital, and not to hand over people prosecuted by Russian justice, the head of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin said today.

He received an adequate explanation recently from the Russian ambassador to the UK, who reported that "the British leadership has adopted for itself a political decision not to return stolen Russian investments and assets, not to extradite people who are being prosecuted by Russian public justice," RIA Novosti quotes Bastrykin at the Federation Council.

The problem of returning stolen Russian capital, particularly from the 90s, is extremely acute. The most famous "fugitive" wanted in Russia for a long time and harboured by the UK, was the former oligarch Boris Berezovsky, a person involved in a number of resonant criminal cases of embezzlement and corruption.

Compensation for the damage caused by these crimes is simply not comparable with the general government losses from this activity. As for the capital once stolen by Berezovsky, hope for its return to Russia is minimal, Bastrykin said.
